Chicago: The Global Indian Diaspora, in collaboration with the National India Hub, on July 29, successfully hosted the Distinguished Lecture on Sustainability, themed “Green Living and Circular Economy.” The event drew over one hundred attendees, including business leaders, government representatives, community members, students, and startups, all united in their commitment to sustainable practices.
Consul General Sh. Somnath Ghosh initiated the event and articulated the consulate’s vision of serving as a knowledge platform. He underscored the potential for collaboration among businesses, community organizations, NGOs, and startups to foster the exchange of knowledge and resources, working towards a sustainable future that benefits the planet and its inhabitants.
Dy Consul General of India, Chicago, T D Bhutia, commenced the event with opening remarks highlighting the significance of green living and the circular economy from the Indian government’s perspective. He emphasized the critical role of sustainability in national policy and the global necessity of adopting environmentally friendly practices.
Rakesh Malhotra, President of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of a cleaner environment and reduced pollution for healthy living. He urged the audience to adopt renewable energy, reduce waste, use eco-friendly products, and embrace the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3Rs) to extend the lifecycle of products and minimize the need for new ones.
Navin Medishetty, National Head of Sustainability at the India Chamber of Commerce and the keynote speaker delivered a comprehensive address on sustainable practices. He discussed the importance of reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and adopting eco-friendly approaches. Medishetty highlighted the significance of connecting like-minded individuals committed to social responsibility and the ethical treatment of employees. He emphasized that people could support one another in creating a positive social impact through meaningful interactions and sharing experiences, knowledge, and resources.
Medishetty also addressed the critical aspects of financial sustainability, resource management, and the benefits of a circular economy. He showcased how companies could achieve profitability while integrating sustainable practices, demonstrating that environmental and social responsibility are compatible with economic success.
Abhinava Raina, Gen. Secretary of the Foundation, introduced the keynote speaker and shared the vision, mission, and purpose of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation. “The purpose of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation is to serve as a bridge between the Indian diaspora and the governments of the United States and India. We are committed to facilitating dialogue and collaboration between the public and private sectors, enhancing economic, social, and cultural ties. We aim to create an environment where the Indian diaspora can actively contribute to development and prosperity,” Raina explained.
Harish Kolasani spoke about the National India Hub, describing it as a central address for all meaningful community activities in Chicagoland. He highlighted its role in fostering community engagement and serving as a nexus for various initiatives to enhance the quality of life for the local Indian diaspora.
The Distinguished Lecture on Sustainability was a resounding success, fostering dialogue and collaboration among various stakeholders. The event highlighted the urgent need for sustainable practices and showcased the collective efforts required to build a greener, more sustainable future. The Global Indian Diaspora and the National India Hub, along with the Indian consulate in Chicago, have set a precedent for future initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.
